January:

This year its been snow, snow and more snow. The skiing has been fabulous. An easy day trip leaving about 10.30am getting onto the slopes for the half day pass at 12.15pm and then returning to Bridge of Cally hotel for tea and mulled wine. An excellent trip.

25th January, Burns Night. Lots of events annually to celebrate the birth of Scotland's famous poet.

February

The daffodils, croci and snow-drops are spectacular at this time of year. Various places have snow-drop festivals with a staggering number of varieties. Head over to Cambo St Andrews and combine viewing this event with a blustery walk along the beach and fish and chips at Anstruther.

March

Five nations Rugby

April

Towards the end of the month the Fife Point to Point is a great day out and for us marks the beginning of the summer season with all and sundry turning out from long winter hibernation.

May

Right at the beginning of the month, the Dollar Duck Race. Hundred of plastic ducks race their way down the Burnside. Combine with a long walk up the Glen and over to the Tormaukin (closed at time of writing) for lunch.

Top tip. This seems to be the best month weather-wise.

June

Top event has to be the Royal Highland Show on the 24th to 27th over at Ingliston near Edinburgh airport.

July

T in the Park. No price increases this year for this music extravagnza starting on Thursday 8th July through to Sunday 11th July. The cottage becomes a tardis with generally 4 revellers squeezing in for the festival.

Hot on the foot is the Open Golf at St Andrew's. Indications are that accommodation in the East Neuk is selling for a 300% premium. Stay over here instead.

August

It's the Edinburgh Festival and over in the other direction on the coast my favourite the Pittenween Art Festival !.The opening night on the first Saturday in August is great fun. A celidph in the fish market followed by a torch-light parade down to the harbour and a fireworks display over the sea. Excellent.

The Festival  is so comprehensive its almost impossible to summarise it save there is something for everyone. Last year we went to a free circus/acrobatic show in the Botanic Gardens followed by an amble through Princes Street gardens taking in lots of street shows and performances. A full "what's on at the Fringe" book will be in the cottage. There are lots of 2 for 1 offers and traffic is easy for the two weeks before all the schools are back or try the Park and Rides.

The weekend around the 9th August is the Kinross show held in the grounds of Kinross House. A much smaller version of the Perth Agricultural Show with animal displays and horse competitions.

As before guests to the cottage get free passes to the Gleneagles Johnny Walker Championships over the last week in August.

September

The local artists are again exhibiting all around Perth and Kinross with lots of opportunities to scout around their studios, have a glass of wine and buy or not buy. Many venues are right on our doorstep.

Last year there was the Gazebo event at Kinross House with ABBA and Queen tribute bands playing. A great opportunity to relax and or dance in the beautiful surroundings of Kinross House.

October

An old favourite including over English half term week is the light show at Faskally Wood near Pitlochry. It makes a great ending to a great day exporing this stunning area just North of Perth. We don't charge any extra for the half term week!

Not to be missed is the sight of rutting stags. The noise is quite incredible. Well worth a visit this month is the highland safari park.

 November

A lovely month for walking and taking in the leaves. Just north of Perth the woods are spectacular or nearer to home the Glens and hills really come into their own.

December

Christmas and New Year or why not take a short break beforehand and take advantage of reduced winter rates.Hogmanay in Edinburgh is not to be missed.
